Gen Z uses AI all the time, so why are they starting to hate it?

More than half of Gen Zers in the United States engage with generative AI regularly, leading many to assume they would be enthusiastic supporters of the technology. However, recent findings suggest a different reality as skepticism among this demographic is on the rise.

A recent survey conducted by Gallup, in collaboration with the Walton Family Foundation and GSV Ventures, sampled over 1,500 individuals aged 14 to 29. The results indicate that Gen Z is increasingly doubtful about the technology they utilize daily.

Is the Excitement Wearing Off?

The data reveals a significant decline in positive sentiments towards AI. Excitement has dropped by 14 percentage points since the previous year, while hopefulness has decreased by nine points. Conversely, feelings of anger towards AI have increased by nine points. Only 18% of Gen Z respondents expressed hopefulness about AI, and merely 22% reported excitement. Alarmingly, 42% of those surveyed reported feeling anxious about AI, with 31% admitting to feelings of outright anger.

Interestingly, even among daily users of AI, who typically exhibit a more favorable outlook, optimism is waning. Among this group, excitement and hopefulness have seen declines of 18 points and 11 points, respectively, compared to last year. This trend suggests that greater access to AI tools is not necessarily leading to increased confidence in their capabilities.

What’s Driving the Frustration?

A significant factor contributing to this growing frustration is Gen Z's perception of AI's effect on their cognitive abilities. Approximately 80% of respondents believe that utilizing AI tools will hinder their learning in the future. There is also skepticism regarding AI's influence on creativity and critical thinking; 38% and 42% of respondents, respectively, stated that they feel AI will do more harm than good in these areas.

The outlook for the workplace appears similarly bleak. For employed members of Gen Z, 48% believe that the risks associated with AI outweigh its benefits, while only 15% view it as a positive addition to their work environment. Trust in AI-assisted labor is notably low, with 69% of respondents expressing a preference for work completed without AI involvement.

Despite these concerns, Gen Z is not entirely dismissing AI. Nearly half of high school students acknowledge that AI skills will be essential for their future careers. This suggests that while they harbor doubts about AI's impact, they recognize its importance and are approaching it with a cautious but open mindset.

In conclusion, while Gen Z utilizes AI regularly, their growing skepticism highlights a complex relationship with this technology. As they navigate the challenges and benefits of AI, their voices will likely shape the future of its development and integration into society.
