Apple is celebrating Accessibility Awareness Day this week with a variety of new content and features designed for users of differing abilities. This initiative spans across services like Fitness+, Apple Maps, and Apple Music, ensuring inclusivity for all Apple enthusiasts.

Enhanced Accessibility in Apple Stores

One of the notable introductions is SignTime, a sign language service that allows customers in Apple Stores to communicate with interpreters using American Sign Language (ASL). Launching in Canada on May 19, this service is already available in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, utilizing ASL, British Sign Language (BSL), and French Sign Language (LSF), respectively.

This week, Apple Stores worldwide are hosting live sessions aimed at educating customers about accessibility features available on their iPhones. Users can also access this how-to content through Apple Support’s social media channels.

New Shortcuts for Mac and Apple Watch

In line with these celebrations, Apple is introducing an Accessibility Assistant shortcut in the Shortcuts app for both Mac and Apple Watch. This feature will help users discover accessibility options tailored to their preferences, making their devices more user-friendly.

Inclusive Workouts for Wheelchair Users

Apple Fitness+ is making strides in inclusivity by offering workouts for wheelchair users. Trainer Bakari Williams will showcase accessibility features such as Audio Hints, which provide descriptive verbal cues for visually impaired users. Additionally, workouts will be adapted, with “Time to Walk” episodes now titled “Time to Walk or Push” and “Time to Run” episodes becoming “Time to Run or Push.” All Fitness+ workouts will feature ASL interpretation and closed captioning in six languages, along with modifications demonstrated by trainers to accommodate various fitness levels.

Exploring Nature with Apple Maps

Apple Maps has unveiled a new guide called Parks Access for All, designed to assist users in locating accessible features, programs, and services in parks across the United States. This initiative, developed in partnership with Gallaudet University, aims to enhance the experience of Deaf, Deafblind, and hard of hearing individuals. Apple Maps will also spotlight businesses that prioritize serving the Deaf community, a topic emphasized by Tim Cook during his recent commencement speech at Gallaudet University.

Sound-Focused Features on Apple Music

Apple Music is introducing “Saylist” playlists, which highlight different sounds for users practicing vocalization or speech therapy. While targeted at specific therapeutic applications, these playlists are available for anyone to enjoy.

Additional Accessibility Features

Further enhancing its commitment to accessibility, Apple TV+ is showcasing popular films and series that feature characters with disabilities. This includes collections celebrating well-known actors from the accessibility community, such as Marlee Matlin from CODA, Lauren Ridloff from Eternals, and Selma Blair from Introducing, Selma Blair. The App Store is promoting apps focused on accessibility, and Apple Books has released a collection of narratives from individuals with disabilities. Additionally, Apple Podcasts will highlight advancements in technology that support accessibility.
