Amazon has officially launched a new generative AI assistant named Alexa+ during a live event in New York on February 26. This upgraded version of the familiar Alexa promises to enhance user interactions by being more conversational and intelligent, significantly personalizing the experience for users.
Alexa+ is powered by advanced large language model (LLM) technology, introducing what Amazon describes as ‘agentic capabilities’. This innovative approach enables Alexa+ to function with a group of systems, capabilities, APIs, and instructions labeled as ‘experts’, which are specifically designed to accomplish a variety of tasks.
The latest evolution in generative AI has arrived. “Meet Alexa+, our smartest, most conversational, and personalized AI assistant to date,” the company proclaimed in a tweet. This new assistant aims to seamlessly integrate LLMs, agentic capabilities, and third-party services, enhancing its overall functionality.
With the help of these ‘experts’, Alexa+ is capable of controlling smart home devices, making reservations or appointments, exploring music discographies, ordering groceries or deliveries, and even notifying users when tickets for events become available. This comprehensive functionality is expected to significantly improve the day-to-day lives of its users.
Panos Panay, Senior Vice President of Devices & Services at Amazon, remarked, “With 600 million Alexa devices now in the world, the latest advancements in generative AI have unlocked new possibilities—enabling us to reimagine the experience in our pursuit of making customers’ lives better and easier every day.”
The conversational skills of Alexa+ have also been enhanced, allowing it to understand half-formed thoughts and engage with users using colloquial expressions or complex ideas more effectively than ever before.
How to Access Alexa+
Given the prevalence of original Alexa products in households, users will have access to Alexa+ through a new mobile application and a web-based experience. The rollout of this AI tool will begin in the United States within the next few weeks as part of an early access period, with subsequent waves of availability planned over the coming months.
During the early access phase, users who own the Echo Show 8, 10, 15, or 21 devices will be prioritized. While Amazon has not confirmed a timeline for global availability, interested users can sign up to be notified when free early access is available.
Moreover, Alexa+ will be included as a new benefit for Amazon Prime members, allowing them to access it for free. For those without a Prime membership, the service will be available for a subscription fee of $19.99 per month.
